A nice smell of citrus is not an unpleasant experience. You often come across products which may remind you of lemons, oranges and other citrus fruits. Manufacturers will pride their product "containing only natural oils". But beware, that natural oil and pleasant smell may hide a potent allergic substance!
The oil from peels of citrus fruits is often used in products for degreasing metal and for hand cleansing in industry.
d'Limonen is, however, also a strong allergen, and is on the list from EU over 26 allergy causing products and must be classified, labelled and warned as a sensitizer under the EU Dangerous Substances and Preparations Directive. d-Limonen is registered under CAS no. 5989-27-5.
Persons allergic to d'Limonen often prove to also being allergic to Colophony (read our separate article on Colophony). As both substances frequently occur in the world of handball, we cannot strongly enough recommend players and officials to pay attention to the list of ingredients in products used.
Several products are available in the market to clean sports arena floors from handball glue. The majority of these products do the job by virtue of 1 of two parameters. First many products contain d'limonen, which may dissolve the handball glue on the floor, but it may also cause nasty allergic reactions. Once the d'Limonen gets into contact with air, it becomes a potent allergen. The other parameter used in handball glue detergents is a pH-rich solution, which in turn may have a detrimental effect on lacquered floors.
Not so our Dip'nClean Floor cleaner, which has been in use in Danish sports arenas for the last 10 years. Dip'nClean Floor operates from different principles. Where other products need to be chemically classified, Dip'nClean carries no chemical classification in the ready-to-use form. Dip'nClean Floor contains no d'Limonen and is very effective in removing handball glue despite a relatively low and friendly pH-value, which will not harm lacquered floors.
