Colophony Allergy Handball glue is a sticky material used for improved ball-control. The term covers several glue-formulations, but common for all: they are based on natural resin/rosin from pine-trees.
The natural resin, however, contains very high levels of the substance Colophony/Kolofonium (CAS nr: 8050-09-7), which requires a special chemical labelling: Xi "Irritant" - Risk phrase-43 "May cause sensitization by skin contact" - Safety phrase-24 "Avoid skin contact".
Allergy to colophony is the 7th most frequent contact allergy (contact dermatitis). Colophony/Kolofonium is part of the standard kit for patch testing at dermatological clinics.
The use of handball glues, which are based on natural tree resin or wax, may cause allergic reactions. We have tested 2 commonly used brands of handball glue against Dip'nGrip. We used a person who is sensitive to colophony. Patches with the 3 brands of handball glue were applied to the testperson's skin. Normally such patches are left for 36 hours before removal, however, in this case we had to remove the patches within 48 hours of application. The test-person developped strong reactions (redness, swelling, and itching) from the 2 competing brands, however no reaction was recorded from Dip'nGrip.
To avoid the risk of colophony allergy it is important to use special handball glue - free from colophony - such as Dip'nGrip. Would you like to learn more? Just paste or type the words 'allergy colophony OR kolofonium OR rosin' in Google and you receive 20.000 hits!!
